of dictatorship within the ranks of a political party itself, and as

CENTERVILLE, Texas Officials from the Texas Department of
Criminal Justice (TDCJ) say the convicted killer who escaped
police custody in Leon County and possibly murdered one adult
and four children from the Houston area has been shot and
killed. The update came late Thursday night.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, was reportedly shot to death during a foot
chase with law enforcement agencies near San Antonio,
authorities tell KPRC. This comes after a investigators found 5
bodies inside a home in Centerville near where Lopez escaped
Thursday around 6pm. TDCJ officials at the time, put out a call
to look out of a getaway vehicle, a 1999 white Chevy Silverado,
that was parked in front of the home. At 10:30pm, Leon County
Sheriffs Office deputies were able to spot the vehicle. Lopez
shot at deputies who then returned fire. Lopez was armed with an
AR-15 and a handgun, TDCJ officials said.

TDCJ Stated:

Law enforcement in Atascosa County located the stolen vehicle,
disabled it with spike strips, & gunfire ensued. At
approximately 22:30, the TDCJ received information that Lopez
had been shot by law enforcement in Jourdanton, Texas, South of
San Antonio.

Breaking developments continued throughout Thursday night.

Heres what happened:
According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, someone
who was worried about the well-being of their elderly relative
called a law enforcement agency which led authorities to the
home.

When authorities arrived at the home, they found one adult and
four children who had been murdered.

The family was said to have been visiting the home, which they
owned, for a short stay.

Lopez is a convicted murderer who was able to escape police
custody on May 12.

Authorities say Lopez escaped on Highway 7 after he stabbed a
TDCJ correctional officer who was transporting him and other
prisoners to Huntsville for a medical appointment.

The 46-year-old was serving a life sentence for capital murder
out of Hidalgo County and attempted capital murder out of Webb
County.

TDCJ officials said that the will review their protocol and
systems after this to determine how Lopez was able to escape.

This is not the first time that health officials have declared a
disease name discriminatory. Soon after WHO in early 2020 named
the novel coronavirus "COVID-19," journalists wrote that calling
the disease, which originated in China, "the Wuhan virus" or
"the China virus" is racist. The Chinese Communist government at
the same time launched a propaganda campaign to deny that the
disease originated in China, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

During the pandemic, WHO covered up China's hesitation to report
on the COVID-19's dangers, then falsely claimed that human-to-
human transmission was unconfirmed. WHO officials, including
Tedros, publicly praised China's transparency as the regime
withheld information.

The announcement comes after a group of almost 30 scientists
said that changing the virus's name is an "urgent need," arguing
that "continued reference to and nomenclature of this virus
being African is not only inaccurate but is also discriminatory
and stigmatizing."

Monkeypox got its name when scientists observed the pox-like
disease in an African monkey colony. The first human case was
reported in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The
groups of organisms that cause monkeypox, also known as clades,
are named for the regions of AfricaWest African and Central
African/Congo Basinin which scientists first found them.

The Biden administration spent nearly $1.5 million to produce a
"transgender programming curriculum" for inmates held in the
nation's 122 federal prisons.

The Justice Department disbursed the funds for a consulting firm
to develop a program to help transgender inmates "manage
identity concerns during incarceration" and advocate for their
"sexual health and safety," according to a government summary of
the contract. The contract also asks the firm to develop a
program to help transgender inmates access hormone treatment
after they are released.

There are only about 1,200 transgender individuals serving
sentences in federal prisons, according to a 2021 Department of
Justice estimate, meaning the Biden administration spent roughly
$1,250 per transgender prisoner. That is more than the $1,200
checks Americans received during the first round of COVID-19
stimulus payments.

The Justice Department's $1,496,500 contract is part of
President Joe Biden's larger, controversial effort to promote
transgenderismeven among minors. The Justice Department in
March sent a letter to all state attorneys general warning them
against restricting transgender hormone treatment for children.
That same month, Biden's State Department announced it would
allow individuals to select "X" as their gender when completing
passport applications. The administration also released updated
guidelines in January that make it easier for transgender
inmates to be placed in facilities that match their "gender
identity."

Following a district court ruling last month, a convicted
terrorist is set to become the first transgender inmate to
receive federally funded sex-reassignment surgery, the
Washington Free Beacon reported. The American Civil Liberties
Union, a Biden administration ally, waged the successful legal
battle on behalf of Cristina Iglesias, who in 2005 mailed fake
anthrax to British government office buildings.

The Biden administration's push for transgender accommodations
in federal prisons comes amid a spike in sexual assaults
committed by biologically male inmates in women's prisons.
Female prisoners have sued state governments, citing sexual
assault concerns, in an attempt to keep male-to-female
transgender inmates in men's prisons.

The funds were first disbursed in 2021 to Nevada-based
consulting firm Change Companies, and the contract runs through
September of this year. The firm, which creates educational
materials for correctional facilities, did not respond to a
request for comment.

The Justice Department told the Free Beacon it "recognizes the
importance of appropriate gender-affirming management and
treatment of transgender individuals in its custody." The
department did not respond to a request for comment on whether
any of the programs have been implemented in federal prisons.

Justice Department officials recommended that the firm draw on
research from left-wing advocacy groups, such as the National
Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), to guide its work. The
NCTE dubbed former president Donald Trump's White House the
"Discrimination Administration" and supports Democrats' Equality
Act, which would prohibit discrimination on the basis of "gender
identity." The organization also launched a politically oriented
"action fund" in 2017, which has exclusively endorsed Democratic
candidates.

The Justice Department programs appear to align with the
agency's most recent guidelines on transgender prisoners. The
guidelines, released earlier this year, prohibit prison staff
from referring to inmates by biologically accurate pronouns if
they identify as transgender. The document defines gender as "a
construct" based on "social identity, psychological identity,
and human behavior."

Conservative nonprofit group Consumers' Research is bringing
billboards to State Farm's Las Vegas conference this week and
releasing national ads as part of its campaign against the
insurance company's decision to distribute books about sexual
orientation to kindergartners.

State Farm partnered with The GenderCool Project to give
thousands of books such as A Kids Book About Being Transgender
and A Kids Book About Being Non-Binary to children five and
older, according to emails leaked by Consumers' Research. The
insurance company ended its partnership with GenderCool only
after Consumers' Research exposed it, the Washington Free Beacon
reported last month.

Consumers' Research executive director Will Hild said that
merely ending the partnership is not enough.

"They owe their customers, agents, and parents everywhere real
answers and a plan of action," Hild said.

State Farm is just one of many U.S. companies and elite
organizations, including Disney and top law firms, to take left-
wing positions on transgenderism and sexuality. Consumers'
Research says that Nike, BlackRock, and American Airlines also
profess "woke politics."

As part of Consumers Research's "Stop Being a Creepy Neighbor"
campaign, the nonprofit is paying for a truck to carry a mobile
billboard outside State Farm's conference, as well as for a
digital ad and a national television ad. The group wants State
Farm to audit programs aimed at children, determine where the
books were donated, and notify the public about where children
received the books.

Those moves are "the least that State Farm can do to prevent
further harm to children and make sure that they don't have
programs like what they do with GenderCool currently happening,"
Hild told the Free Beacon. "It helps parents whose kids may have
been exposed or are being exposed currently to these materials
because of State Farm."

The books, which State Farm intended to "help diversify
classroom, community center, and library bookshelves," promote
the use of "they" as a singular pronoun and teach that
"everyone's journey to understanding their gender is unique to
them."

"Gender is how you feel in your heart and mind, but it may not
match what the doctor says when you are born," reads A Kids Book
About Being Non-Binary, which is marketed as age-appropriate for
five-year-olds.

Hild said the Consumers' Research campaign against State Farm is
"ongoing."

"We're going to continue to remind them of their obligation to
their own customers and to America's parents," Hild said.

foundationa far-left activist who was ousted from the
Minneapolis City Council for supporting an initiative to defund
police.

On Monday, former Minneapolis council member Phillipe Cunningham
thanked Obama after starting a "new role at the Obama Foundation
as the deputy director U.S. lead of global leadership
programs." The move comes just months after voters ousted
Cunningham, who backed a failed measure to defund city police,
from the Minneapolis City Council in November. Cunningham in
June 2020 also spoke at a defund-the-police rally, where the
activist and nine other council members pledged to "end policing
as we know it." Cunningham's opponent, LaTrisha Vetaw, said that
pledge made her feel "silenced" and called public safety "the
only issue" in the race.

Obama's decision to ignore voters in deep-blue Minneapolis and
hire Cunningham for a top position contradicts the former
president's rhetoric on the defund-the-police movement. Obama in
November 2020 said he would not defund police and criticized
activists who use the phrase. But Obama appeared alongside
Cunningham at a virtual town hall when the activist was openly
calling to defund policeduring that June 2020 event, Cunningham
stressed the need to "completely transform our public safety
system."

President Joe Biden, Obama's vice president, claimed last year
that those who say Democrats want to defund police are "lying."

As part of the Obama Foundation, Cunningham will head the U.S.
branch of the group's global leadership programs, which aims to
provide "emerging leaders" with "values-based leadership
development frameworks to help build their skills and scale
their work across public, private, and nonprofit sectors." It's
unclear how Cunningham's values align with the programthe Obama
Foundation did not return a request for comment on the hire and
whether the group agrees with Cunningham's position on defunding
police.

Republican National Committee spokesman Nathan Brand said
Obama's new hire shows "there is no daylight between the looney
left and the Democratic Party establishment."

"With radical defund-the-police leaders like this in charge, it
is no wonder Democrats are alienating more and more Americans
and are set to lose in November," Brand told the Washington Free
Beacon. "From that perspective, Dems couldn't have picked a
better person to lead these efforts."

Cunningham, a biological woman who transitioned as a college
junior, became the first transgender man of color to be elected
to public office in the United States in 2017. Roughly three
years later, following George Floyd's death in the summer of
2020, the then-councilmember stood behind a giant "DEFUND
POLICE" sign at a Minneapolis rally and argued that the city's
residents could "keep our own community safe" without police.
Cunningham also praised those who "threw the first bricks at
police officers" during the Stonewall Riots in New York City.

One year later, as the defund police movement lost popularity,
Cunningham did not back down. In 2021, Cunningham backed an
unprecedented amendment to dismantle the city's police
department. The measure, which Minneapolis voters rejected by
double digits, would have replaced the city's police department
with a "Department of Public Safety" and called to abolish the
city's minimum funding requirements for police.

Cunningham's decision to back that amendment came as Minneapolis
experienced a surge in violence. In the last week of 2021, the
city notched its 96th homicide, just one murder shy of its
record level seen in 1995. That trend has continued into this
yearin late April, Minneapolis had 9 murders in 10 days,
putting the city on track to surpass its 1995 numbers.

Obama has worked with far-left activists beyond Cunningham.
Defund-the-police organizer and MSNBC contributor Brittany
Packnett Cunningham served on the former president's policing
task force. She later argued that rising crime rates are the
police's fault.

"This rise in crime is not the fault of the movement, it's
actually the fault of the police," Packnett Cunningham said
during a June 2021 MSNBC appearance. "This has been our point
all alongwhy should we keep funding systems and institutions
that keep rendering themselves ineffective?"

Just days after a nature documentary hosted by former president
Barack Obama launched on Netflix, the streaming company is in
shambles, with its shares in freefall.

On April 13, Netflix released all five episodes of its
documentary series Our Great National Parks, produced and
narrated by Obama. While culture critics in the liberal media
received the series warmlyeven as one admitted, "I can't say
that I learned a tremendous amount"investors were less
convinced.

In a stunning show of pessimism in the company's situation,
Netflix's stock imploded on Tuesday, plunging 37 percent by
Wednesday morning. The collapse was driven by Netflix's Tuesday
announcement that it lost subscribers last quarter for the first
time in more than a decade. The service is scrambling to remedy
its poor subscriber numbers, announcing last month that it plans
to start charging customers for sharing their accounts with
others.

The company's decline is a reflection of the failure of its
costly partnership with the former president. Netflix in 2018
entered into a multi-year agreement with Obama and his wife
Michelle to produce films and series. It's unclear exactly how
much cash the company burned to hire the Obamas, but considering
that Netflix paid the creator of Glee $300 million for a five-
year deal, the amount was likely exorbitant.

Through that deal, the Obamas brought to Netflix a documentary
called American Factory, about an Ohio auto factory bought out
by a Chinese state-backed company. While the film purported to
shed light on a clash of cultures and the struggles of the
American working class, it instead served as "a platform for
Communist oligarchs to propagandize."

If Communist propaganda wasn't unpalatable enough for viewers,
the Obamas are reportedly working to bring to Netflix a kids
show called Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents, a
revival of Michelle Obama's failed crusade to get kids to eat
healthier.

In Barack Obama's latest series, he takes viewers on a tour of
the planet's greatest national parks and their wildlife, from
the sea otters of California's Monterey Bay to the lions of his
native country, on Kenya's Yatta Plateau.

Some critics of Netflix argue that the company's programming
across the board, not just the content the Obamas brought to the
site, is to blame for the company's hemorrhaging of subscribers.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tuesday that the "woke mind virus" has
made Netflix "unwatchable."

That critique is borne out by Netflix's release this week of
He's Expecting, a Japanese film about a "successful cisgender
man" forced "to confront social inequities he'd never considered
before" when he becomes pregnant.

University forum on media disinformation alongside a group of
allies linked to fake news scandals, including his former aide
Ben Rhodes.

Obama will give the keynote speech at the symposium as part of
his personal crusade to fight disinformation in the digital
domain. He announced this week that the Obama Foundation will
work with experts to combat disinformation, which he said poses
"real challenges" for democracy. Obama reportedly joined the
fight after discussions with Apple heiress Laurene Powell Jobs,
who has funded a network of fake local news sites that push
Democratic talking points.

Obama's foray into the debate comes as Democrats have pressured
social media companies to aggressively combat disinformation.
Speakers at the Stanford forum will discuss the role of tech
companies and the U.S. government in reducing political
polarization.

Some of the speakers, including Obama, have themselves been
accused of pushing false, politically divisive information,
raising questions about their participation in a disinformation
event.

Obama was awarded the 2013 "Lie of the Year" for declaring, "if
you like your health care plan, you can keep it," in order to
sell Obamacare to the American public. Rhodes, a national
security adviser to Obama, admitted in 2016 that he manipulated
journalists in order to push favorable but misleading stories in
the media. Rhodes bragged about creating an "echo chamber" of
reporters who amplified White House spin. Rhodes also said he
"largely manufactured" a narrative about the timeline by which
the Obama administration began negotiating with the Iranian
government about its nuclear energy program.

Two lesser-known panelists have been at the center of
disinformation firestorms. Rashad Robinson, the president of the
civil rights group Color of Change, repeatedly pushed the false
claim that actor Jussie Smollett was the victim of an anti-gay,
anti-black hate crime in Chicago in 2019. Robinson pushed the
hoax even after evidence emerged that Smollett lied to police
about the attack. Renee DiResta, a Stanford researcher
moderating a session with Obama, advised a technology company
that created fake Russian bots in order to influence Republican
voters in the 2017 Alabama special election. DiResta told the
Washington Post she knew the tech company was involved in the
Alabama race, but she denied knowing about its deceptive tactics.

Robinson and DiResta are speaking on a panel about the U.S.
government's role in "facilitating consensus and reducing
polarization at home."

In addition to a post at Stanford, DiResta is a fellow at the
Emerson Collective, the media investment company owned by Jobs.
The company has invested in outlets like the Atlantic, Axios,
and Ozy, a failed pop culture website under investigation for
fraud. Jobs recently hired a public relations firm, Sunshine
Sachs, that has worked for Jussie Smollett and disgraced
Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Michigan Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer says she's added
25,000 "good-paying auto jobs" during her tenure. The state has
actually lost thousands of auto jobs on her watch, labor
statistics show.

In a June 2 press release, Whitmer said she was "proud" to
announce Michigan has "added nearly 25,000 auto jobs since I
took office." The Democrat roughly three weeks later repeated
the claim, writing in a "mobility and electrification" fact
sheet that she "is ensuring Michigan lives up to its legacy as
the place that put the world on wheels by creating nearly 25,000
good-paying auto jobs."

Bureau of Labor Statistics data, however, contradict that claim.
Whitmer inherited 169,500 auto jobs when she became governor in
January 2019, according to the agency. As of May 2022, that
number is 166,700a decrease of nearly 3,000 jobs.

Whitmer's deceptive declaration shows how the Democrat is
attempting to rebound on economic issues following her stringent
stay-at-home orders, which shuttered local stores but deemed
marijuana dispensaries, lottery ticket vendors, and big-box
retailers "essential." While Whitmer has touted leading the
"best economic recovery in Michigan history," a June WalletHub
report ranked Michigan 46th in unemployment claim recovery.

Michigan Rising Action communications director Mary Drabik said
Whitmer's "gaslighting" on auto jobs is "not surprising."

"When Gov. Whitmer's claims are this far detached from reality,
it becomes difficult to believe anything she says," Drabik told
the Washington Free Beacon. "But coming from the governor who
claims her nursing-home policies saved lives and vacationed in
Florida while telling Michiganders to avoid flying south, the
gaslighting is not surprising."

Whitmer's office acknowledged that the governor's claim stems
from "the number of jobs announced since January 2019," some of
which are not yet actualized. Still, Whitmer communications
director Bobby Leddy said the governor "is proud of her record
of job creation, particularly in the auto industry, as we move
to cement Michigan's legacy of manufacturing." Leddy did not
address why Whitmer's statistic does not account for jobs that
have left the state since 2019.

This is far from the first time Whitmer has faced criticism for
failing to deliver on a claim. In April 2020, the Democrat
pledged to give back a portion of her salary for the duration of
the coronavirus pandemic. But Whitmer ended the pledge just five
months later in September, even as her indoor gathering
restrictions and public face mask requirements lasted for 15
months.

Whitmer, who implemented a policy that required nursing homes to
accept positive coronavirus patients who were discharged from
hospitals, is up for reelection in November after a roller
coaster of a first term. Whitmer's national profile exploded
during the beginning of the pandemic thanks to her harsh
restrictions and public feud with then-president Donald Trump.
Whitmer went on to ramp up those restrictions, which sparked
large protests, particularly as the Democrat defied her own
rules.

Whitmer's potential Republican opponents include political
commentator Tudor Dixon, chiropractor Garrett Soldano, and
businessman Kevin Rinke. Republican voters will choose their
nominee during Michigan's August 2 primary.

Nevada Democratic senator Catherine Cortez Masto quietly honored
a drag queen and self-described "faglicious homo" for his years
of work with children at a local library.

During a June 26 "Drag Queen Story Time" event in Reno, Masto's
office presented a "certificate of commemoration" to drag queen
Miss Ginger Devine, a Washoe County Library tweet shows. Devine,
who also goes by Reverend Divine and whose real name is
Christopher Daniels, has performed as a drag queen in the Reno
area for more than a decade and has read to children at local
libraries since at least 2019. In a 2010 blog post, Daniels
described himself as a "Broadway loving, Project Runway
watching, rainbow scarf wearing, footlong Subway sandwich eating
faglicious homo."

Cortez Masto has yet to publicly promote her award to Daniels
and did not interact with the library's tweet that revealed the
honor, suggesting the Democrat is hesitant to weigh in on the
controversial "Drag Queen Story Time" program as she faces a
difficult reelection bid against Republican Adam Laxalt.

On the same day as the library's event with Daniels, for
example, Cortez Masto accused Republicans of working to end same-
sex marriage and pledged to stand with "LGBTQ communities." But
the senator has refrained from discussing more hot-button,
"culture war" issues such as drag queen story hours and critical
race and gender theory, even as she praises far-left activists
who say Nevada "should be teaching" critical race theory in
public schools. Laxalt, meanwhile, has called to keep critical
race theory out of the state's schools and "protect students and
teachers from indoctrinated bigotry."

Cortez Masto did not return a request for comment.

Prior to his drag career, Daniels attended the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, where he minored in LGBT Studies and Women's
Studies and worked for Sex Out Loud, a campus organization that
teaches students "all about the world of kink, including role
play, kinky toys, and bondage."

For years, Daniels wrote and managed a "Confessions of a Drag
Queen" blog that detailed his experiences as a performer in
Reno. In one post, Daniels discussed how he "get[s] so much more
action as a drag queen" than he does "as a guy." In another,
Daniels wrote that he "almost got into a fight with a 10 year
old" at a Reno roller rink and arcadewhere he said the "average
individual in the establishment was 8"because a "band of stupid
10 year old boys" objected to his song request of Cyndi Lauper's
"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

"Now I am not entirely sure what happened next. I think it was
the combination of flashing strobe lights, the pain in my calves
from bracing myself on the floor, or perhaps Mars was in
retrograde but I basically went off on this ten year [sic] and
started screaming and ranting while skating around the rink.
From what I remember it went something like this," Daniels
recalled.

"Uh excuse me you prepubescent choir boy. What the fuck are you
doing? What the fuck can you do?'" Daniels asked the child. "I
can buy porn, cigarettes, and liquor and enjoy them at my
leisure if I desire. I can drive, vote, and gamble if I want to.
Join the 21st century you 8 year old Justin Bieber worshiping
wannabe. Cyndi Lauper is TIMELESS so shut the fuck up and sit
down."

In addition to his rousing roller rink stories, Daniels has
dismissed concerns from the "parental units of America" that
sexually explicit materials are "influencing the young
impressionable minds of the youth." Daniels called the complaint
"bullshit."

"I would really like the parents of America who are outraged to
remove the pole from your sphincter and get the fuck over it,"
Daniels said in 2010. "Are you kidding me with all of this? Take
a look around. Television shows are increasingly featuring more
violence, more sex, and more foul language; a reflection of our
society which as of late has more violence, more sex, and swears
a hell of a lot more."

Daniels has also delivered "sermons" as "Reverend Divine" at
Reno's Center for Spiritual Living, a religious science group
that believes "in the healing of the sick through the power of
this Mind." In a 2017 appearance at the center, Daniels called
drag queens "God's sacred messengers on this earth." The comment
came after Daniels retired from performing as a drag queen in
2014roughly five years later, he returned as Miss Ginger Devine
in a show he called "The Come On Her Back Tour."

"When all of a sudden, God parts the clouds and he shines a
light and tells you to take your wig off the shelf, don your
best hooker heels, and go to church, you don't question the good
Lord, you just do," Daniels said in 2017.

Daniels did not return a request for comment on his award from
Cortez Masto. The incumbent Democrat will face Laxalt in
November after both candidates handily won their June primary
elections.

Former president Barack Obama is tapping as the head of his
charitys "Girls Opportunity Alliance" a disgraced Democratic
operative and "women's rights" activist who helped former
governor Andrew Cuomo (D., N.Y.) smear his sexual harassment
victims.

Tina Tchen, a former chief of staff to Michelle Obama, will
serve as the Obama Foundations chief strategy and impact
officer, the charity said. The appointment comes months after
Tchen resigned in disgrace from the feminist group Times Up for
helping Cuomo during his sex scandal. Tchen reportedly advised
Cuomos team on an op-ed that would discredit one of his
accusers, Lindsey Boylan, and demanded Times Up staffers "stand
down" from issuing statements in support of Boylan. Tchen
intervened in a similar manner to protect Joe Biden against
sexual assault allegations during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Tchens involvement in those scandals makes her a questionable
pick to lead the Obama Foundations efforts to "empower
adolescent girls around the world." Valerie Jarrett, the
foundations CEO and a longtime Obama crony, called Tchen an
"accomplished lawyer" and "advocate for gender equality."

"The Obama Foundation claims shell be fighting for women, but a
lot of women in Andrew Cuomos office know thats unlikely,"

When Spotify in 2019 signed a roughly $25 million deal with
Barack and Michelle Obama to produce podcasts, the media hailed
the move as a triumph in the audio streaming service's quest to
become "the world's No. 1 audio platform." Now, three years
later, Spotify wants nothing to do with the former first couple.

As the Obamas' contract with Spotify comes to an end and the
couple solicits bids for a new deal, Spotify is not looking to
renew the partnership, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The company
reportedly felt it got the raw end of the big money deal, as the
Obamas were less than motivated to appear in person on the
platform's podcasts.

"Spotify wanted more shows featuring two of the most famous
people in the world," Bloomberg reported, while the Obamas'
production company preferred to "provide a platform for a range
of voices."

Friction between the two parties had been visible for months.
Vanity Fair reported in February that "the Obamas are more
interested in lifting young new voices than carrying shows
themselves, and that this focus hasn't always aligned with
Spotify's." The couple were also unhappy with Spotify's
insistence on exclusively carrying their podcasts; they wanted
their products broadcast on a number of platforms.

The Obamas will commit to appear on only eight podcast episodes
each under a new deal, Bloomberg reported. In contrast,
Spotify's most-listened-to podcast host, Joe Rogan, released 15
episodes in March alone.

Michelle Obama released only 10 episodes of her podcast since it
launched in July 2020, and the last episode came out more than a
year ago. Barack Obama's podcast series, a collection of
conversations with Bruce Springsteen, contained just eight
episodes.

The news of Spotify cutting ties with the Obamas comes after
Netflix's stock plunged 37 percent just days after the release
of a nature documentary hosted by Barack Obama.

defamation, cut ties with Precision Strategies, the PR firm
founded by three veterans of former president Barack Obama's
reelection campaignStephanie Cutter, Jen O'Malley Dillon, and
Teddy Goff.

Cutter, who served as deputy campaign manager for Obama's 2012
campaign, has also worked with President Joe Biden as chief
program executive of the 2020 Democratic National Convention and
as executive producer of the 2021 presidential inauguration.
Goff served as digital director on Obama's reelection campaign
and stayed on as a member of the presidential transition team
before cofounding Precision Strategies. Dillon, another Obama
alum, left the firm to manage Biden's campaign in 2020, and
currently serves as White House deputy chief of staff.

Heard's decision to fire the firm for its inability to thwart
"bad headlines" is merely the most recent consequence of Obama's
failed presidency. It is also the most recent example of
Democratic strategists advising dubious characters. Biden
adviser Anita Dunn, who also worked for Obama, provided "damage
control" advice to Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood
rapist. Lis Smith, who served as communications director for
Pete Buttigieg in 2020, advised disgraced former governor Andrew
Cuomo (D., N.Y.) and his staff regarding allegations of sexual
assault against the one-time Democratic superstar.

Depp's defamation suit concerns a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in
which Heard claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence.
It was recently revealed that communications strategists at the
ACLU, a left-wing activist group, were heavily involved in
drafting the op-ed on Heard's behalf.

Dozens of elected Democrats still have their state and district
offices in pandemic mode, locking constituents out of their
taxpayer-funded government offices, a Washington Free Beacon
investigation found.

Across the country, American taxpayerswho foot the bill for
congressional district officesattempting to visit their
representatives are greeted by signs that tell constituents the
government is locked to them. The Free Beacon in recent weeks
found that at least eight Democratic senators locked their
constituents out of their taxpayer-funded offices and that over
two dozen House Democrats' in-district offices around the
country are closed or inaccessible to constituents.

Meanwhile, many of the businesses surrounding them are
completely open. In Las Vegas, for example, work from home was
halted for city employees last March, and hospitality workers
show up daily to cater to the hordes of tourists who drive the
state's economy. Minutes from the bustling Las Vegas strip, Sen.
Catherine Cortez Masto (D., Nev.) has her government office
closed to visitors.

These findings indicate that Democrats' office closures extend
far beyond the U.S. Capitol, where a Free Beacon investigation
last month found dozens of offices shuttered. Democrats in
public statements have attempted to move past the pandemic, with
President Joe Biden using last month's State of the Union
address to urge Americans to get back to work.

The Democrats' office closures come as many elected officials
are campaigning in-person and criss-crossing the country for in-
person fundraisers. In New Hampshire, Sen. Maggie Hassan (D.)
regularly hosts in-person campaign events but has her office
closed due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, according
to a sign posted on her office door. Last month, she attended an
indoor campaign event alongside Rep. Chris Pappas (D., N.H.). A
Free Beacon source found Pappas's state offices also closed in
the middle of the workday.

Government spending disclosures show that Pappas's office spends
nearly $5,000 a month in rent for his district offices and an
additional $255 a month for "district office parking."

Pappas's office denied the office is closed, disputing that the
footage obtained by the Free Beacon from a Tuesday afternoon
during business hours shows a closed and locked office door. A
spokesman said the office was open for regular business hours on
the day the Free Beacons source visited.

The source said the office is telling a "blatant lie."

"I rang the doorbell, hung out for three to four minutes, then
took the video," he said. "Why would the door be locked at 4:18
p.m. on a Tuesday if someone is there?"

In Cortez Masto's neighboring Arizona, Sen. Mark Kelly
(D.)whose Washington, D.C., office was open when the Free
Beacon visitedhad his Phoenix office closed and locked to
constituents during business hours. Despite his office closures,
Kelly has traveled for in-person fundraisers in San Francisco.
In 2020, Kelly spent $136,223.83 of taxpayer money on office
rent-related costs. His office told the Free Beacon that "our
Phoenix office has been open to the public and staffed in person
serving Arizonans" but would not say it was open five days a
week or during the entire workday.

Meanwhile, much of Arizona has been functioning as normal. Since
the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Doug Ducey (R.)
has said he expects his own staff to come into the office every
day "as long as they are healthy."

In Ohio, congressman Tim Ryan, who is running for Senate, had
his in-district office closed. He spent $81,957.91 on rent-
related costs last year. Despite Ryan keeping his Ohio office
closed, he says he is running a campaign based on looking
"people in the eye, tell[ing] them I give a damn about them."
Even though his constituent office was closed, Ryan told local
reporters that he is busy campaigning in-person.

"We're going to see people everywhere, meeting them and learning
about their communities and what the opportunities are in these
communities," Ryan said last month.

Hassan's and Ryan's offices did not respond to requests for
comment.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) recently extended proxy voting
in the House, which a Free Beacon analysis confirmed is
regularly abused by Democratic members of Congress who claim
they need proxy voters due to the coronavirus while they travel
the country for political fundraisers and events with Biden.
According to the Free Beacon analysis, Ryan proxy-voted dozens
of times while he held in-person campaign events across Ohio.

Republicans are already using Democratic office closures, first
reported by the Free Beacon, to make the case to voters that
Democrats aren't working for the American people. Cortez Masto's
likely Republican opponent, former Nevada attorney general Adam
Laxalt, used Free Beacon footage of her closed Washington, D.C.,
office in a digital campaign targeting the absentee senator. His
campaign is also targeting Cortez Masto with a microsite,
NoShowMasto.com.

In Colorado, Republican Senate candidate Joe O'Dea used Free
Beacon footage of Sen. Michael Bennet's (D.) closed D.C. office
to argue it's time to close Bennet's office for good. It's not
just Bennet's office in the Capitol that's closed, however. His
taxpayer-funded constituent office in Denver is closed "until
further notice" because of the "recent increase of COVID-19
cases." O'Dea told the Free Beacon that "the working people of
this country, the people I'm going to represent in Washington,
never stopped working."

Bennet's office told the Free Beacon that the sign from January
telling Coloradans that Bennet's Denver office is closed has
been taken down. Cortez Masto's office similarly told a local
journalist that signs outside her offices that told Nevadans her
team is still teleworking "were mistakenly left up" for months.
Her office told the Free Beacon that despite her office
closures, she has kept working.

The Free Beacon found that the offices of other Democrats,
including Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas) and Cortez Masto's
fellow Nevada senator, Jacky Rosen, were open to the public and
staffed.

Update, April 8, 11:06 a.m.: A previous version of this story
stated that the district office of Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney
(D., N.Y.) was closed. Though a front door to the Newburgh,
N.Y., building where his office is located is locked, there is a
side entrance and a spokeswoman for Maloney says the office is

The military touts a "recruits market" that should attract
fresh blood into its ranks as each branch faces recruiting
shortfalls following the coronavirus pandemic.

"In real estate, you talk about buyer's and seller's markets,"
Maj. Gen. Edward W. Thomas Jr., commander of the Air Force
Recruiting Service, told Fox News Digital. "You know, this is a
recruiting market right now. There are good opportunities to
serve and good incentives to do so."

The military faced a drop-off in recruitment during the
pandemic: Each branch met active component goals, but reserve
numbers have fallen short each year. That shortage has now hit
the Active component goals for the Army and Navy, with other
branches just meeting their goals.

One significant factor that Thomas highlighted is the lack of
engagement the military could pursue while schools remained
remote in 2020 during nationwide lockdowns: A 2018 report by the
Institute for Defense Analyses heavily focused on recruitment at
the high school level, indicating the high value placed on that
pipeline.

"Really in the long term it's declining eligibility, declining
propensity or interest in serving and declining trust in
government," Thomas said.

"Today, 77% of American youth aged 17 to 24 will not qualify to
serve the United States military without a waiver, 77%," he
continued. "That's based on a variety of different reasons, from
weight to medical issues to academic issues to behavioral
issues, mental health issues. It's a wide variety with 77% don't
qualify without a waiver."

And Thomas admitted that the perception around the military
withdrawal from Afghanistan may have impacted recruitment in the
last six months, but stressed that he would not consider it "one
of the primary drivers."

The drop-off forced the military to reduce their goals, which
they were able to do thanks to higher-than-usual retention.

"Back in 2020 and '21, we did reduce our recruiting goals
slightly because retention was high," Thomas said. "We have not
seen that in wanting to."

"What we saw when COVID hit, we had record high retention in the
Air Force and I believe across the body," Thomas explained. "You
know, frankly, it just wasn't a great time to transition out
into the civil sector to be looking for a job. With all the
uncertainty both in the market and people's personal lives with
COVID, retention was high."

Thomas argued that the job market continues to play a major
factor in the recruitment equation. With the nation facing its
highest level of employment in 50 years, the military faces
"fierce" competition with the general job market. The rate of
unemployment spiked early in the pandemic but has since then
returned to around 3.5%

"It's good for the nation in general," he said. "It makes the
battle for talent all that much more ferocious."

To try and compete with that healthy market, the military has
offered larger-than-usual bonuses, including up to $50,000 for
certain fields, such as special warfare. Other fields for "hard
to fill jobs" have incentives ranging from $3000 to $6000. The
main goal is to keep trying to attract the best of the best,
including varsity athletes, candidates with multiple language
proficiency or candidates with expertise in niche fields
including crypto.

Part of the problem may be due to the lack of understanding when
it comes to the kinds of roles available in the military. In
just the Air Force alone, Thomas noted that there are "about 130
enlisted career fields."

"Almost anything you can do in a major city, maybe other than
being a stockbroker, you know, or a few select jobs you can
pretty much do in the Air Force," he explained. "So all of the
peripherals that we recruit for, we're recruiting for medical,
for radiology technicians, for dental technicians you name it."

Assistant Cook County States Attorney Jim Murphy accused Kim
Foxx of caring more about political agendas than for crime
victims and prosecuting criminals

An Illinois prosecutor took Cook County State's Attorney Kim
Foxx to task in a scathing, office-wide resignation letter,
saying her office cares more about political narratives than
crime victims.

Assistant Cook County States Attorney Jim Murphy said he "can't
continue to work for an administration I don't respect," in his
letter resigning his position after 25 years of service. His
last day was Friday, according to a copy of the letter obtained
by Fox News.

"I wish I could stay," he wrote. "However, I can no longer work
for this Administration. I have zero confidence in leadership."

Fox News has reached out to Foxx's office but has not received a
response.

Murphy cited a number of reasons for his departure, including
the "Safe-T Act," a measure that requires prosecutors to present
a higher burden of proof to hold accused criminals until trial.

While Murphy said he supports eliminating cash-bail, he said
Foxx's office rushed the reform and that his concerns were
brushed aside. Murphy also cited "dangerously" low staffing
levels in all units and bureaus in Foxx's office, to the point
where one or two-person courtrooms are now common.

"If this administration was truly concerned with effectively
fighting violent crime, then they would fully staff those
courtrooms and units," he wrote. "Meanwhile the rest of us are
overworked, overstressed, and under-resourced. But at least we
were allowed to wear jeans in July."

Murphy said Foxx was angry one day several months ago when he
was summoned into a meeting about bond hearings he was involved
in. One involved a "massive shootout" and the other a woman who
was gunned down walking to a store after being caught in the
crossfire.

Murphy said Foxx was upset about a newspaper headline that
indicated the suspect would not face a murder charge under the
Safe-T Act. He said Foxx appeared to be more upset with the
headline than the fact that a woman had died.

"That is what is wrong with this administration. I've seen day
after day," he said. "How many mass shootings do there have to
be before something is done."

"This administration is more concerned with political narratives
and agendas than with victims and prosecuting violent crime," he
added. "That is why I can't stay any longer."

to a judgement call, but Murphy had the facts in front of him and made
public statements that were contradicted by these facts. He was about

A Vestavia Hills man is now formally charged with capital murder
in the shooting deaths of a man and two women during a church
potluck supper Thursday night.

Robert Findlay Smith, 70, is charged in the slayings of Walter
Bart Rainey, 84, of Irondale, Sarah Yeager, 75, of Pelham and
a Jane Pounds, 84, of Hoover.

The charge against Smith is capital because two or more people
were killed in the shooting. He was booked into the Jefferson
County Jail at 3:33 p.m.

District Attorney Danny Carr announced the warrants. Our
thoughts and prayers are with the victims families and friends
along with the entire Vestavia Hills community,' Carr said.

Smith, described by police as the lone suspect, was taken into
custody after police were called at 6: 22 p.m. to an active
shooter at the church. He was held in the Vestavia Hills City
Jail overnight and will now be transferred to the Jefferson
County Jail where he will be held without bond.

Smith lives near Cahaba Heights and police blocked off his
roadway for much of Friday afternoon while they carried out a
search warrant at his Sicard Hollow home. Public records show
Smith is an ATF licensed firearms dealer, with a business called
Original Magazines 2 at 4128 Sicard Hollow Road, which is also
his home address.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive in the shooting, and
court records dont list any prior violent crimes for Smith. He
received a DUI in 2016, and went to driving school.

He pleaded guilty and received a $465 fine to DUI in Chattanooga
on November 2005 case in which he was also charged with
possession of a handgun while intoxicated. That charge was
dropped.

Smith in 2008 sued Samford University and UAB police Officer
Jeremy Burchfield, A UAB police officer who detained him on
Samfords campus. The suit said Smith was illegally detained in
2007 for carrying a firearm on campus and impersonating a police
office by carrying a badge. He claimed in the suit there was no
evidence of that and the allegations were fabricated by Samford
and police.

His lawyer argued that Many of Plaintiffs customers are law
enforcement personnel and merchants who sell firearms in
Jefferson County and outside of Jefferson County throughout the
state.

He won a jury verdict with damages of $29,000 against Burchfield.

Last nights incident happened during a Boomers Potluck dinner
that started at 5 p.m. at the church. There were about 25 at the
dinner in the parish hall.

Smith was sitting alone, and a longtime church member approached
him and invited him to sit at a table, said the Rev. Doug
Carpenter, who founded the church in 1973 and retired in 2005.
He identified himself to victim Rainey only as Mr. Smith and
refused to join them.

He then pulled out a handgun and shot three people, Carpenter
said.

Jim Musgrove, a church member, hit the shooter with a chair and
wrestled the gun away from him, Carpenter said.

It was extremely critical in saving lives, said Vestavia
Hills police Capt. Shane Ware. In my opinion, hes a hero.

No one at the dinner knew Mr. Smith, who claimed he was a
former member. Were trying to figure out who he is, Carpenter
said.

Law enforcement radio communications during the active shooter
situation indicated that police were familiar with the suspect,
knowing where he lived and what he drove.

Ware said he could not yet comment on any prior possible
involvement with the suspect.

Any past interactions involving this suspect are currently
being investigated by numerous agencies, Ware said. It would
be premature for me at this time to go into that topic.

The suspect has previously attended services at this church but
as far as the motive behind this, its still being looked into
by many agencies, Ware said. It wouldnt be appropriate for
me to speculate.

At some point he produced a concealed handgun and began
shooting, striking the three victims, Ware said.

The suspect acted alone, Ware said. There is no threat to
the community.

Georgia investigators have released body-camera footage in
connection with a woman who died after she was taken into
custody and fell out of a moving police patrol car earlier this
month, as her family is demanding answers in her death.

Brianna Grier, 28, was taken into custody on July 15 after two
Hancock County Sheriff's Office responded to a home in Sparta,
Georgia, authorities said.

Her mother had called 911 because her daughter was having a
mental health crisis, according to civil rights attorney Ben
Crump, who is representing the family.

While being transported to the sheriff's office, Grier fell out
of a patrol car and sustained "significant injuries," the
Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), which is investigating
the death, said in a statement.

Grier suffered brain trauma and was in a coma before she died on
July 21, according to Crump.

"Yet again, we have another African American citizen killed in
just an unbelievable way while in the custody of the police,"
Crump said during a press briefing Friday.

The briefing comes two days after GBI released new details in
the incident.

According to GBI, Grier was placed in the backseat of the patrol
car while handcuffed with no seatbelt on. The rear passenger
side door was never closed before they drove away, GBI said.

Before the deputies placed her in the car, Gier was on the
ground "refusing to get in the patrol car" and "made a statement
that she was going to harm herself," GBI said.

Both the rear driver's side door and rear passenger side door
were open while the deputies put Grier in the backseat, but they
only closed the rear driver's side door before leaving the scene
and driving a short distance, GBI said.

"The investigation shows that the deputy thought he closed the
rear passenger side door," GBI said. "Body camera footage
reveals the deputies had no other contact with Grier from the
time she was placed in the car until she fell out of the moving
car."

The family called for more transparency as they try to make
sense of what happened, including the release of the body-camera
footage.

"We're trying to get answers of what really happened, that's all
we want to know," Grier's father, Marvin Grier, said during
Friday's press event. "We want to know what happened."

"That was my child," he continued. "That was my child."

Later on Friday, GBI released body-camera footage in connection
with the incident, though the video doesn't show how Grier ended
up outside the patrol car.

The 10-minute clip shows the deputies struggling to get a
distraught Grier into the patrol car.

A deputy, identified by GBI on Saturday as Deputy Timothy
Legette, can be seen on his bodycam footage pulling over and
walking back to Grier, who was lying face down on the ground on
the side of the road. The deputy taps her a few times and says
her name.

A second deputy who was trailing the patrol car walks over and
remarks that she is still breathing.

"How's your back door open?" the second deputy says.

The second deputy attempts to pull her to an upright position.
"She jumped out the car," he says.

That second deputy was identified by GBI as Lt. Marlin Primus,
the brother of Hancock County Sheriff Tomlyn "Terrell" Primus.

According to GBI investigators, Lt. Primus opened the rear
passenger's side door and forgot to close it. He was not wearing

Legette never went on the passenger's side of his car prior to
driving away, the released body-camera footage shows. After
pulling over, he can be seen walking to the open passenger's
side door and closing it.

The incident is still under investigation by GBI.

Sheriff Primus told protesters gathered outside the sheriff's
office on Wednesday that he had planned to release body-camera
footage of the incident once GBI's investigation is completed,
the Union-Recorder reported.

"A lot of people have already drawn their own conclusions," he
said, according to the publication. "Some people already feel as
though we have things to hide. But we do not have anything to
hide. The video footage will show evidence based on what has
been stated already."

Crump said his team plans to perform an independent autopsy once
her body is released from GBI, and that they will investigate
what led to Grier, a mother of 3-year-old twin daughters,
falling out of the car while it was moving.

"That's what we are primarily for -- is to get answers and
demand justice," Crump said. "What this is really about is those
3-year-old little babies [who are] going to have to grow up
without their mother."

Gerald Griggs, president of the Georgia State Conference of the
NAACP, joined the family on Friday and called for accountability.

"To the Hancock County sheriff, it's time to be transparent.
It's time to be accountable," he said. "To the GBI, it's time
for y'all to meet with this family. To the governor, it's time
for you to recognize, again, that Georgia has a police
accountability problem."

"Georgians of all color deserve to feel protected in the custody
and control of law enforcement," he said.

GBI refuted that it hasn't met with the Grier family, saying in
a statement Friday night that it has met with them "in-person on
multiple occasions since July 15."

"Agents have also had several conversations with the family,
providing them with investigative updates," the agency said.

Scientists believe they have finally discovered the trigger for
the worlds biggest climate catastrophe. The catastrophe in
question took place around 252 million years ago. At the time,
the world was going through a tumultuous period of rapid global
warming.

Many previously believed that a volcanic eruption in Siberia was
the cause. However, new evidence shows that the climate of the
world was already changing. Researchers published a new study in
the journal Nature, which confirms several super-eruptions in
eastern Australia could have helped expedite the climate change
all those millions of years ago.

The researchers say that super-eruptions shook eastern Australia
between 256 and 252 million years ago. These super-eruptions
could have been a great primer for the massive climate change
that the world was going through at the time.

During these eruptions, researchers believe the eruptions spewed
massive amounts of gasses and ash into the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gas emissions have always been a leading cause of
rising global temperatures. The levels of gas that these
eruptions would have unleashed would have easily played a part
in the worlds biggest climate catastrophe.

The researchers say that the spread of the ash produced is
consistent with some of the largest volcanic eruptions that we
know of.

Evidence of catastrophic eruptions in Australia

Additionally, the researchers say that evidence of the
eruptions, and their source, can be found in the eroded remnants
of volcanoes preserved in the New England region of New South
Wales.

Further, as the researchers note, layers of light-colored
volcanic ash can be found buried in the sedimentary rock. They
found these layers across massive areas of New South Wales and
even Queensland. Even more intriguing, though, is the scale of
the super-eruptions. It makes sense that they would have been
big, especially if they helped cause the worlds biggest climate
catastrophe.

The authors of the study believe that the volcanoes spewed at
least 150,000 km³ of material into northern New South Wales over
the course of those four million years. For comparison, the
deadly eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 was roughly 1 km³ of
rock and material. Even the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD
would have only been around 3-4 km³.

The researchers involved in the study also published a detailed

Beyond Meat has fired the executive accused of becoming violent
after a college football game along with 19% of its workforce as
the demand for plant-based meat cools down.

In a Monday report, Beyond Meat announced that Friday would be
the last day for their Chief Operating Officer who was suspended
in September. The plant-based company's stock was down over 9%
as of Saturday morning, according to CNBC.

Although it remains unclear exactly how many employees were let
go, the company ended 2021 with about 1,100 employees.

On Friday, Beyond Meat announced in a news release that its 2022
net revenues likely will decrease by as much as 14% from that of

"While we believe the current headwinds facing our business and
categoryincluding record inflationare transient, our mission,
brand, and long-term opportunity endure," Brown said.

"To manage through the current environment and realize the
opportunity ahead, we are significantly reducing expenses and
sharpening our focus on a set of key growth priorities," he
continued.

COO Doug Ramsey was suspended from the company after police said
he bit and ripped "the flesh" off a man's nose during a minor
parking garage accident following a University of Arkansas
football game, Insider's Samantha Delouya reported. Ramsey was
charged with third-degree battery and one count of terroristic
threatening, according to Washington County Police.

Ramsey's alleged road rage isn't the first sign of trouble for
Beyond Meat. According to an August report from Bloomberg, the
company eliminated 40 job positions as part of cost-cutting
plans.

"While difficult, this decision is one piece of our larger
strategy to reduce operating expenses and support sustainable
growth," Brown said in a memo viewed by Bloomberg.

#TeamRelaxer or #TeamNaturalHair? Its a debate Black women have
been having since the dawn of time. Whereas relaxers, a chemical
treatment that loosens curl patterns and straightens hair, were
once popular for a myriad of reasons including discrimination
against Black hair, the latest natural hair movement, which had
a resurgence in the 2010s, saw many women trading in their Dark
& Lovely boxes for weekly deep conditioners.

But now research warns that the use of straighteners, relaxers,
and other hair products is linked to uterine cancer. The study,
which was published earlier this week, comes at a time when some
Black women who previously wore their hair naturally have either
returned to relaxers or are considering doing so.

Frequent and especially long-term use of some hair
straightening products can affect long-term health. This is
particularly important for Black women to know as the natural-to-
relaxer movement gains momentum, says Dr. LaTasha Perkins, a
family physician based in Washington, D.C., who was not involved
in the study

The hashtag #RelaxersAreBack has 5.3 million views on TikTok to
date and features Black women getting relaxers at the salon or
doing it themselves at home. To combat new growth, it is common
to get a relaxer every six to eight weeks, or roughly six times
per year.

According to researchers, hair products may contain hazardous
chemicals with endocrine-disrupting and carcinogenic
properties. Previously studies have demonstrated certain hair
products come with a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer,
but this is the first one to show an association with uterine
cancer.

The study, referred to as the Sister Study, involved nearly
34,000 participants between the ages of 35 and 74 who did not
have breast cancer but had at least one sister diagnosed with
the disease. Researchers evaluated their self-reported use of
hair products, such as hair dyes, straighteners, relaxers, and
body waves within the prior 12 months.

Most of the participants were white and did not include a
sufficient sample of Black participants to determine association
with the group even though the authors recognized that adverse
effects are more likely with this group given higher prevalence
of use, initiation at younger ages, and more toxic formulations.

The risk of developing uterine cancer for frequent users of
relaxers is 4.05% compared to 1.64% for women whove never used
hair straightening productsa number worth paying attention to,
says Perkins. Mind you, uterine cancer is generally rare, but
is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system
according to the study.

Over an average follow-up of 10.9 years, 378 uterine cancer
cases were identified in the study. It is believed that the
endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in the hair products could
contribute to uterine cancer risk because of their ability to
alter hormonal actions. Researchers also observed an 80% higher
risk of uterine cancer among participants who used hair-
straightening products, with the risk more than double for women
who used the products more than four times in the previous year.

Generally speaking, cancer is the abnormal replication of cells
that spread to other parts of the body. Hormone-disrupting
chemicals like parabens, formaldehyde, and metals, which are
commonly found in hair straightening products, have been
connected to all sorts of cancer, explains Perkins. When we
put chemicals like this on our scalps, a highly porous part of
our body, those chemicals are absorbed and enter our
bloodstream. This can prompt the growth of abnormal cells, and
eventually result in a case of uterine cancer, for example.
Hormone-disrupting chemicals disrupt the natural course of cell
development.

As the natural-to-relaxer movement grows, Perkins urges caution
for those considering a return to relaxers.

Before you make the decision to return to a relaxer, please
educate yourself on what youre putting on and in your body.
Take the time to understand the composition of your preferred
relaxer and consider formaldehyde-free or lye-free options, for
example, she says. Your scalp is a reservoir for absorption,
so be mindful of how certain chemicals could affect your health
in the long run. And remember, there are ways to get the same
look through alternative hair styling methods.

Some alternatives to relaxers that achieve the same straight
hair look are blowouts, silk presses, wigs, and extensions, such
as sew-in weaves. The important thing is to be mindful of
potentially toxic chemicals being used to achieve those styles,
warns Perkins.

If youre unsure about which ingredients may be harmful, Perkins
encourages people to call their family physician.

I want Black women to feel empowered to choose safer options,
says Perkins, who stopped relaxing her hair more than 20 years
ago and currently wears her hair in locs. There wasnt much
research on the health repercussions of relaxers then, but the
more I learned about how chemicals absorb into the scalp, the
less comfortable I was using relaxersI want to encourage more
Black women to consider alternatives to relaxers, defining what
beauty means to them along the way.

I begged my mom for two things one Christmas season when I was
nine years old: a Barbie doll house and a perm the
colloquial term we used for relaxers. We did not understand then
that there was a major difference between the two.

Though hesitant at first, as a mom with four daughters Im the
youngest she knew my pleading wouldnt stop until my hair
looked like one of the girls on the Just For Me box.

I found out only recently that those models didnt actually have
the relaxed hair themselves.

Before that Christmas break was over, what once was a giant afro
was bone-straight and down the length of my back like Id never
seen it before.

My hair is thick and coarse, so at the time, I assumed the
chemical straightening cream had to stay in my hair for a longer
length of time to really get the kinks and curls straighter.

So when my mom asked if my scalp was burning yes, it was! I
pushed through and held out just a little bit longer to make
sure it would really work.

Even at that young age, I thought beauty was pain and that
having straight hair was more socially acceptable though no
one in my family ever told me that.

That belief was reaffirmed for me that Monday when I walked into
school and people responded well to the length and straightness
of my hair.

I got relaxers pretty regularly for the next six or seven years
after that.

My mom, myself, our friends and family had never given any
thought to how the application of these chemicals on our hair
and scalp might be affecting our physical health.

And we wouldnt know until over a decade after my first relaxer
and over a century after chemical straightening was introduced
to the Black community in the early 1900s.

A link between chemical hair straighteners and uterine cancer in
Black women
On Oct. 17, the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences (NIEHS) published findings of the Sister Study,
including data from over 33,000 women who were tracked for
nearly 11 years.

The goal was to pinpoint risk factors for breast cancer and
other health conditions, and researchers discovered something
alarming.

Within that time frame, 378 women were diagnosed with uterine
cancer, and those who used hair straighteners over four times in
the previous year were more than twice as likely to go on to
develop uterine cancer compared to those who did not use the
products.

Around 60% of the women who reported using hair straightening
products self-identified as Black, the press release states.

Because Black women use hair straightening or relaxer products
more frequently and tend to initiate use at earlier ages than
other races and ethnicities, these findings may be even more
relevant for them, said Che-Jung Chang, an author on the study
and a research fellow in the NIEHS Epidemiology Branch in the
press release.

Though the study didnt include specific brands, there are
certain chemicals that may be contributing to the increased
uterine cancer risk including:

Parabens
Bisphenol A
Metals
Formaldehyde
For other chemical-based hair products like highlights, bleach,
hair dyes and perms, researchers didnt find associations with
uterine cancer.

Thankfully, women in my life like my older sister and best
friend, who defied the straight hair standard, showed me what
embracing my natural hair could look like.

I began my natural hair journey at 16, and I havent relaxed my
hair since.

Still, I wonder what these findings will mean for me, my loved
ones and other Black women in the future.

"Which way am I going?" asked President Biden when he ended
Thursday's press conference at the NATO summit in Madrid. He
began to exit stage right, before someone redirected him toward
stage left. This combination of ignorance and indecision was not
new. Throughout his 18 months as president, Biden has been
confused, uncertain, sluggish. He behaves as if he is guided by
unseen forces. He moves on a course set by hidden captains.

People notice. Every time I speak to a conservative audience, I
am asked who is really in charge in the White House. My answer
has been that the president is in command. After all,
institutions take on the character of their leaders. If all the
White House has to offer is excuses, if decisions are made
either slowly or randomly, if the communications team and the
president and vice president seem to live on different planets,
if incompetence and mismanagement appear throughout the
government, it is because the chief executive allows it. No
conspiracy is required to explain the ineptitude. This is Joe
Biden we are talking about.

Lately, though, I have been having second thoughts. Not that
Barack Obama or Ron Klain or Dr. Jill are running the show in
secret. What I have been wondering, instead, is whether anyone
is leading the government at all. There is no power, either
overt or covert, in or behind the throne. The throne is empty.

Think of the economy, the border, and Ukraine. From time to
time, Biden addresses these issues. He may even answer questions
about them. The White House sends out press releases describing
its latest initiatives. Vice President Harris or the second
gentleman pops up somewhere to talk about all the good she and
he are doing.

Yet each of these elementsthe president, his staff, his
spokesperson, his vice president, his policycomes across as
disconnected, discombobulated, as if each inhabits a separate
sphere of activity. Whether because of Biden's age, or his
weekend trips to Delaware, or years of remote work, or lower-
level staff turnover, or a painstakingly slow decision-making
process, or ideological stubbornness, or a lack of a strategic
plan, this administration drifts from crisis to crisis, and from
one bad headline to the next. And nothing improves.

The June 29 Reuters/Ipsos poll has Biden's job approval rating
at 38 percent. By far, Americans say the economy, unemployment,
and jobs are the most important problems facing the country.
What is Biden's plan? He blames Vladimir Putin and the energy
industry for high gas prices. He says it's the Federal Reserve's
job to reduce inflation. He asks Middle East autocrats to pump
more oil rather than easing the burden on domestic fossil fuel
production. He wants more spending, more tax hikes, more
regulation. Will Congress give him what he wants? Okay, you can
stop laughing.

The result: America slouches toward stagflation because the
alternativereducing (non-China) tariffs, suspending "Buy
American" provisions, reversing his entire energy policy,
dropping his tax plans, committing to spending cutsis
unacceptable to the president.

Earlier this week, authorities found at least 50 dead people in
a tractor-trailer on the side of a road in El Paso, Texas. The
victims were illegal immigrants who had paid human traffickers
to bring them to the United States. This ghastly discovery was a
reminder of illegal immigration's human toll, and of the
inadequacy of Biden's migration policies. One reporter asked
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for her response
to Republican critics. "The fact of the matter is the border is
closed," Jean-Pierre said, "which is in part why you see people
trying to make this dangerous journey using smuggling networks."

Closed? Unauthorized crossings hit another milestone in May,
when Border Patrol encountered some 239,000 individuals. At that
time, however, authorities could expel illegal migrants under
public health regulation Title 42. The status of the Remain in
Mexico program was unclear. Biden, of course, wants to end Title
42, and the Supreme Court ruled on June 30 that he has the
authority to shut down Remain in Mexico. If you think the border
is "closed" now, just wait.

Biden could explain to the nation why it is in our interest to
admit as many asylum-seekers as possible, even if a rise in
illegal entries and in cross-border human and drug trafficking
is the consequence. Or he could admit that his policies are
responsible for a humanitarian disaster and withdraw his earlier
executive orders. Or he could use whatever political capital he
has left to pass an immigration reform bill that combines legal
pathways to entry with workplace enforcement. But he won't do
anything. Why? Because he is either satisfied with the situation
or simply overwhelmed by it. Neither option is reassuring. And
the problem grows worse.

Where Biden is most engaged is Ukraine. He warned against the
invasion, rallied NATO against Russia, encouraged Sweden and
Finland to join the Western alliance, and committed America to
supply Ukraine with aid and weapons. "The generic point is that
we're supplying them with the capacityand the overwhelming
courage they've demonstratedthat, in fact, they can continue to
resist the Russian aggression," Biden told reporters Thursday.
"And so, I don't know whathow it's going to end, but it will
not end with a Russian defeat of Ukraine in Ukraine."

Shouldn't the leader of the Free World have some idea of how
this brutal conflict might end? The war has taken a horrible
human toll. Its effects on energy and food markets have been
devastating. The goal should be to end the war.

How? Not by giving Putin what he wants. By giving Ukraine what
it needs to push Russia back to the pre-war line of control. A
Russia on defense is more likely to sue for peace.

Biden makes this prospect more difficult by limiting the systems
we provide to Ukraine, by dribbling them out over time, and by
insisting that we won't provide Ukraine with weapons that could
strike targets inside Russia. From the start of the war, Biden
has been more interested in signaling to Russia what he won't do
than in causing Putin to fear what he might do. His self-
constraint extends the fighting rather than shortens it and
provides Russia the space for its slow roll through eastern and
southern Ukraine. The war has become another disaster that Biden
allows to play out in the background, in between bike rides and
scoops of ice cream from Starkey's.

American aid to Ukraine is just and necessary. Since 1947, the
policy of the United States has been to "support free peoples
who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or
by outside pressures." But Biden won't be able to sustain the
domestic support for American involvement in a years-long war of
attrition. He needs to match his actions with his words and drop
his inhibitions on the aid we provide the Ukrainians. And he
could do so while launching a peace initiative, thereby
restoring coercive diplomacy as a tool of American foreign
policy.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Decisive leadership is not Joe Biden's
calling card. And so, the crises continue to mount. And
Americans are left with feelings of aimlessness and fear.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled Wednesday that the
case of Crystal Mason be reconsidered by a lower appeals court.

Crystal Mason, who was sentenced to five years in prison for
casting a provisional ballot in the 2016 election while she was
on supervised release from a federal conviction, will have her
case heard again.

The New York Times is reporting that The Texas Court of Criminal
Appeals found that a lower appeals court wrongfully upheld parts
of Masons 2018 conviction. Specifically, the Second Court of
Appeals in Tarrant County said in 2020 that her unawareness that
she was ineligible to vote was irrelevant to her prosecution.
The Criminal Appeals court disagreed Wednesday, ruling that her
case be reconsidered.

Masons attorneys with the American Civil Liberties Union have
argued that per the Help America Vote Act of 2002, provisional
ballots should not be criminalized because they did not
represent an actual vote.

Further, Masons lawyers have argued that state laws in Texas
stipulated that knowingly voting illegally was key to being
guilty of the crime.

According to the report, Mason was advised by a poll worker that
she could submit a provisional ballot in the 2016 election.
However, as a felon on probation, she was ineligible to vote.

Her vote was never counted.

I am pleased that the court acknowledged issues with my
conviction, and am ready to defend myself against these cruel
charges, said Mason in a statement. My life has been upended
for what was, at worst, an innocent misunderstanding of casting
a provisional ballot that was never even counted. I have been
called to this fight for voting rights and will continue to
serve my community.

We believe that ultimately what is right will prevail and will
continue to support Ms. Mason as she battles this miscarriage of
justice, said Tommy Buser-Clancy, senior staff attorney for the
ACLU of Texas. Ms. Mason never would have risked her liberty by
submitting a provisional ballot if she knew the State considered
her ineligible to vote. She followed the rules, committed no
crime, yet was slapped with an egregious 5-year sentence. We
hope the court system soon will overturn this unwarranted
conviction. Ms. Mason and her family have fought this for far
too long.

Masons conviction has been frequently referenced on social
media to highlight the disparities in voter fraud cases,
particularly after Republican state legislatures continue to
perpetuate The Big Lie that there was widespread voter fraud
in the 2020 election in minority communities.

A Seattle suburb has reached a $1.5 million agreement with a
former assistant police chief who was suspended for posting Nazi
insignia on his office door, The Seattle Times reported on
Friday.

In September 2020, former Kent Assistant Chief Derek Kammerzell
was suspended for two weeks without pay for the violation, which
also included making fun of the Holocaust, per The Times.

KIRO7, a CBS TV affiliate in Seattle, reported that the city
said Kammerzell's two-week suspension was "appropriate based on
the facts and after considering the assistant chief's 27 years
of performance without discipline, the lack of any allegations
of excessive force during his career, and a record with no known
complaints from the community."

However, members of the community were outraged and Mayor Dana
Ralph demanded Kammerzell step down.

Kammerzell was placed on administrative leave in December 2021.
Since he was already disciplined, Arthur Fitzpatrick, who is the
interim city chief administrative officer and also the city's
attorney, said the discipline would come at a high cost to the
city, per The Times.

Kammerzell initially had demanded $3.1 million for his
resignation but after months of negotiations, he and the city
reached an agreement of $1.52 million.

"While this is a substantial sum, we strongly believe that
settling this matter will be a substantial step towards meeting
our commitment to the community and continuing with the
excellent work the police department is doing," the city said,
according to KIRO7

The Seattle Times reported that even if Kammerzell was initially
fired, he would have been able to win his job back and get back
pay.

"Had the city terminated the assistant chief, it is confident it
would have been in no better position than it is now,"
Fitzpatrick said.
