Post by John DoePost by Governor SwillPost by John DoeExactly. God save us from the partisans who think their party is pure
good and the other party is pure evil. The vast majority of people in
both parties are patriots. And working together to get things done is
not weakness.
In my view, the biggest obstacle to unity is that we have some
for-profit news organizations who are dividing the country for profit
and to benefit the ultra-rich. Their damage would be limited if more
people consumed a variety of news sources and thought critically about
what they are being told.
It's because Reagan abolished the Fairness Doctrine. Under that rule, media was
required to provide equal time to both sides of any political discussion.
This situation made the media self fact checking because if Joe said the sky was
green, John was sitting in the next chair over to argue the point.
As a result, media tended to be very, very careful to get their facts straight
or to issue disclaimers when there was doubt. Also, opinion was clearly labeled
as such and kept very separated from the actual news desk.
When the FD went away, news became a free for all. Basically, it was legal for
anybody to say anything without the slightest fear of contradiction. The power
grab in Washington led to distortion and omission of facts and finally to
outright lies. That's how Fox made their money. They figured out what lies
folks wanted to hear, and then told them.
Reinstating the Fairness doctrine would bring to an end this habit extremists
have of lying.
I hadn't thought about that recently, but you're right. Restoring it
would be a great step.
The media with the biggest history of lying would likely be the biggest
objector, but truth should outweigh profits.
Since we're on the topic of bias, so to speak, I ran into a heavily biased
survey as a popunder in my browser recently.
At what point does the bias of this survey become apparent to you?
